I've steadily become more religious over the years. I went from being a little punk-a*s dumbass Atheist semi-goth kid to being a bad-a*s fairly tall Irish Catholic.

I think there seems to be a bit more religion in the America as opposed to several years ago, but I honestly think religion should have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with politics. So Sarah Palin can go back to Alaska and Glenn Beck can go back to the Insane Asylum.

I just heard a great piece on the radio about the two groups rallying in Washington today (tea-partiers and civil-righters/lefties). Both were extremely peaceful and cordial to each other. In one mentioned encounter, clusters from both groups met each other on opposite sides of the same street. One group started chanting "USA, USA"... to which the group from the other side countered... by merely joining in the chant.

While the rhetoric from various camps (religious and not) seems to only stoke the pot-boiler, methinks the vast majority of Americans still resonate more with what JFK said in the last public address before he died:
"For in the final analysis... we all inhabit this same small planet, we all breathe the same air, we all cherish our children's futures, and we're all mortal."

I didn't agree with Jerry Falwell but I liked him as a person since he and Larry Flynt became friends after the lawsuit. That some adamant Christians are able to operate like that gives me a little hope. However the Moral Majority nonsense was not only not good for the country, it's contrary to the spirit of the political process, not to mention that if there were a MM, someone's still letting porn be a multi billion business. All that's been said about people getting more smart and not identifying with named religions is true. Unfortunately only about 4 million people watch cable news;unfortunate that it's not less but they are who influences the country or sheep, if you will. For the time being at least, you can still find excellent reporting on the net that is actual news and facts.

Religion is what's holding us back in the world. Religion = problems. I didn't need to watch Religulous to tell me that.

I don't agree with Mormonism but they are dang smart fiscally. I'm less of a conservative from a religious standpoint as I am from a fiscal perspective.
I don't think America is becoming more religious. But, if there's a smart business/economic person running for election and they happen to be religious. I don't mind nor care, I'm voting for them.

I think that America is becoming more religious, although perhaps not in the traditional way. People are becoming more spiritual, but are also more open-minded about other religions and are more likely to change their religion from their parents.

Also, in a way it seems like atheism is becoming a secular religion. I read an article recently that said that that an atheists' group was blow drying peoples' heads of former Christians to show their commitment to no God.

What's really hilarious is that Glenn Beck is a Mormon. I wonder how many of his admirers know that.

I don't think any of us can really answer this question--it's just a matter of what the polls say

According to various polls, the amount of Americans identifying themselves as non-religious are increasing. So no, we are not becoming more religious. But religious people always tend to be more vocal than the non-religious. They're a fearful bunch and they like to make a lot of noise whenever our country shows signs of progressing.

I think, overall, America is learning to be okay with people having different religions, but there does seem to be a paranoid conservative-Christian panicked backlash to this happening.

The US has the most people who claim to follow a religion, of all of the industrialized countries, anyway. The last stats I saw (sorry, don't remember where, so feel free to ignore) on the subject indicated that the number is down of late, but not by much.
