I highly recommend Sade. I was 7 years old when their first album released in 1984. Fell in love with the music then, still love it now. Probably my all time favorite.

I love this post. I love great music I am always trying to expand my boundaries when it comes to musical talent. The scene gets flooded with so many halfwits out there making "music" that people just seem to gobble up. I actually really like a band from England right now called Porcupine Tree, they are a very diverse band.

I hear ya flash, but I have heard some pretty good new stuff to. I've accepted, begrudgingly, that there really is not the musicianal talent level on the instruments that there once was on a wider scale. It's hard to call more than a few artists here and there virtuosos on their instrument.

But to be fair, I suppose, the Beatles and Rolling Stones weren't known for their musicianal talent as much as being well known for their songwriting.
However, I can enjoy a cheeky pop song such as Katy Perry's "California Girls" knowing well that it's not intended to ever really be a serious song or I can enjoy Arcade Fire/Muse who I consider to be very good songwriters and talent in the current scene.

@flashbanding I never have technically studied the history of music. I listen to new and old stuff. When I start listening to an artist or band I'm unfamiliar with, I want to know about them, their history. So I normally try to find out. You mentioned Jackson Browne in a post, "Something Fine" is one of my favorite songs. At the moment, I listen to "Suspicious Minds" by Elvis quite a bit. :)

There has always been a discrepancy between what sells and what lasts. When Hendrix was doing his most interesting stuff The Carpenters were selling. Now over time Hendrix has out sold them by a long shot.

Don't be too hard on the kids. Sure they have terrible taste in music but it's the same terrible taste that made The Osmonds famous back in the day.

Most of the time I go by the "if you don't like, pay it no mind" concept. But every so often some person tries to force their personal taste on me, via web(like this place) or stuck in a car with a friend and the shittiest of cds. So every time someone forces their taste on me I give them a honest opinion. Most of the time they are insulted.

I have many friends who are musicians, more that appreciate music and a handful that study and follow music. We have had more than a few great conversations about what makes music likeable and lasting. Why are people attracted to music? So many questions and so many variables. Those that simply like music and only LISTEN to it for how it makes them feel in the moment may not be true music lovers. Many are just developing their tastes ( I remember loving The Pet Shop Boys! Where are they now? Are we still talking about them? No.) True music lovers will grow and their tastes will develop, and thankfully for old farts like us and the internet, we can introduce them to those great artists with influence and lasting power.

LOL. That's what my mom said about the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and everybody else.

Actually I have done some study into the "roots" of American music. and they are buried deep in Blue Grass.

I think the infux of "OMG GREAT VIDEOS" onto SP are from newcomers trying to use the site like facebook or twitter. It would be good if, rather than trying to turn SP into something just like these sites (ug!), they let it be what it is: a site for deeper introspection.
