A subject that scrapes a fresh wound. My brother. Nine months ago. We were Irish twins. Alternatives? When one is feeling so low as to entertain thoughts of taking one's life, the only "alternative" is relief. My form of relief is different from yours. If my brother's existence here was so painful that his form of relief was suicide, so be it. To me it comes down to desire. If my desire to live outweighs my desire to die, I will live and vice versa. If someone can figure out how to change my desires, an alternative may be possible. However, we all know how easy it is to change someone else.

You need to make them feel connected. And you have to be willing to do that yourself. Spend time with them, invest yourself with them emotionally. It's the only way to stop them feeling so disconnected and irrelevant that they may as well be dead. If you are not willing to get VERY close to this person, then you cannot help them. They don't need a counsellor or other friends, they need you.

I heard a lot of noise throughout this thread.
I found it sad.
Perhaps they were trying to distract from....
Time.
All one can do is give their quality and quantity of time.
If it still happens, which it does sometimes,
I am sorry for your loss.
I am sorry for theirs' too. I have a hunch they regret it.
It is a sad state of mind.
It is a sad topic.

I have had to deal with this as one of my "pen pals" is a cocaine addict. He is constantly battling suicidal thoughts and I offer encouragement in the right path... In which I tell him that he needs to channel his thoughts into positive ones, like something that he enjoys, like classes, or joining a group. That has seemed to help him in showing him that suicide definitely isn't worth it when you are happy or content with your life.

Think about life - Your life, my life, your family's life. Compared to the " life - span " of the Earth & the universe as a whole, it's only less than a nano - second. Would you want to let the brief flicker burn out so soon ?
