How is it that we exist?

Is the existence of a sentient human species accidental or intentional? Are we lucky or unlucky to be what we are, where we are?

Can we exist accidentally but still be guided by some spiritual Creator, or are the concepts mutually exclusive?

The real question that will screw with your noodle is, do we really exist? We are all atoms and when you look deeply into our being all you see is nothingness, so do we exist at all, are we figments of each others imagination...?

What is so powerful that it animate nothingness...

what do you call it when its neither? after all, assuming there is a GOD... I did not create myself... I am eternal and thus I never had a say in my own being nor what shapes my intentions... are they even my intentions? I am simply nature in action, no beginning, no ending... and doing what my true nature dictates... my intellect is apparently part of this and shapes what happens, but is that more than accidental?

You know what I'm going to say, @mer191 , but question was tough to resist:)

We are intentional. It is beyond our realm of understanding, how we can exist intentionally, with lives fraught with suffering and questioning and pain, but the fact is that the existence of ANY good in this world is proof of God, and for whatever reason, He intentioned to have us all here.

It is in the interest of humanity to deny God's existence; because if He exists, we are accountable to something, someone, other than ourselves, and that flies in the face of every human beings' innate selfishness, our innate desire to do what we want, when we want. Every single human being, but One, who has ever walked the face of the Earth, has this characteristic. But if God did exist, no longer can we do whatever we want, we have to exist in a world where we are held accountable. Yet, whether someone believes in God or not, everyone is living under His rules. We all experience the consequences of our actions, whether those actions be positive or negative. And all of us, in our most honest moments, would probably admit that his or her heart longs for something more than that which is found in any human relationship, any earthly encounter. The Bible says that on EVERY human heart is written the laws of God, and our consciences attest to this fact, whether we want to admit that or not, too:)

I understand where @livingthedream is coming from, and with all due respect, but arguments such as he makes break down once examined further.Truth is not truth if it is relative; post-modernism sounds good on the surface, but it doesn't hold water.

@mer191, "luck" connotes a feeling of randomness, of chance. Life may seem like that, but I'd say "luck" or "unluck" are actually misnomers. Luck or unluck would exist in a world of capriciousness, of chance. That is not our world. We see good and bad things every day, and don't understand them. On the surface, it seems as though we live in a world of chance. But our lives are like the underside of crosswork sampler; we see the tangled threads and messes and seeming randomness of our lives and ask, how can we be intentional? But God sees the other side, the picture He is making, and knows why and for what reason we have experienced every single thing we have.

We make sense of the madness by believing in luck or unluck, because anything outside of that would blow our minds. What we fail to realize is that luck or unluck do not exist. There is purpose to everything. This becomes a huge, bitter pill to swallow when one considers all of the heinous activities that occur, and I don't have any answers for why they occur, when a good God is in control. But I do know that every good and perfect gift, EVERY one, comes from God, whether you acknowledge Him or not. That's how good He is.

And the answer to whether or not we are intentional is answered in Jesus. It is a fact that He existed, proven by documentation that has nothing to do with the Bible (see Josephus, Jewish chronicler; amongst others). His existence, His life, His death, and His resurrection answer the question definitely that YES, we are intentional, YES, we are loved, YES, life is really hard but we have help right there for the helping:)

I believe the concepts are mutually exclusive that we would exist accidentally yet be guided by a Creator. If He is guiding us, that means He's much smarter than us, knows everything, sees everything, can perfectly orchestrate everything to 'guide us'. If we are an accident, would we even want to be guided by some thing up there who is taken by surprise by our existence?

Thanks for putting the question out there! I'm sure I will get much scathing commentary, and that is fine, but I had to speak from my heart, and share what I know to be true, regardless of how continually hated it makes me:)

I don't believe that these questions are universally answerable, as each individual has their own unique experience on Earth. Perhaps we are to decide the meaning of our own personal existence , not have it hand-fed to us. Could that be the meaning of life?
