Why do people feel the need to criticize people because of their beliefs?

I mean, what is the point? If you know that what you believe is true, then do what you have to in order to let others know that truth. Pen Jillette said it best. I watched an interview of him, and he said that If someone was standing in the middle of the street, and a truck was headed toward them, to run them over, would'nt you say something to them? And if they didn't listen, would'nt you push the person out of harm's way? If you know something is true, and you don't let others know. You are letting them get run down by a truck. I know Jesus is real. I know God is real. There's no way we could have all that we do. I mean, think about other planets, and galaxies! You think there are armenian princesses crying over gucci bags in other worlds? In other galaxies?

Belief can be wrong. Just because you know something doesn't mean that it's right. Knowing is subjective, based on logic, reasoning, speculation, and our senses. A few centuries ago, everyone "knew" that the earth was flat. People still believed it until we sent people into space and took a picture of our spherical earth. So, they knew things, but they were still wrong. You believe that god and jesus are real. There are people out there who are dead set against you, and believe that you are wrong. There are people who would say that they know you are wrong. So, tell me, who is right, and how can you be sure? You can't rely on what you feel, and on what you say you know, because you don't actually know anything. Hell, you could be proven wrong tomorrow, and then what? People criticize each other because of some deep-seated need to be right. Beliefs are the core of our identities, and if yours is challenged by another, or told to be wrong, then you get your back up. A sense of insecurity is the drive for all of this criticism. Personally, I think a lot of people are wrong, and some people may be right. But I won't criticize them unless they choose to share. And I try not to get angry at them unless they try and force their beliefs on me. In which case, they deserve every bit of criticism they get.

It's hard to only think about what you believe because sometimes you think you know things that others never neccesarily pondered that could sincerely help that person, the people, the world. It's hard to close your mouth when beautiful things could come out. Like what you've said about the gucci bag thing... I completely agree with you. But a gold digger or shopaholic would think something different. Being in society today, everyone wants to act the same and chase after the same "nice" brands... (it's all made up value lol)... but then when you go to church or for me, sunday school, or go help the community, you see how many cant even lay their hands on anything so "nice." It humbles you, it makes you aware of everything around, the planets, galaxies, signs of God. It's all about how you think, and if what you've learned through faith you apply to everyday life. I've feel like you do everyday... what can we do? US! Otherwise we arent learning or teaching anything. So I speak my mind...

@regmor12 I think of it more in the sense of turning away from what our own inner voice tells us is good or bad. Some people micht call that "God". I call it a part of all of us, inside.

Does the mind of man turned away from God imply ignorance, defiance, ambivalance, or disinterest? Also, "a jarring wallop on the back of the head " and "and not give us that gentle reminder" seem to be a little at odds. Can you elaborate?

Because it makes us feel important and relevant. One of our biggest fears is that we don't matter. But the truth is, we really don't. I'm all about a healthy debate but once verbal fist get thrown, I'm out. "If you know what you believe is true..." That's just it. We don't know what we believe is true. I can't even prove that I actually exist, must less prove that my "beliefs" about the cosmos are "true". I have a question for you: How do you consider the celestial bodies and then come up with the thought "Jesus and God are the only explanations."?

Criticism of religious beliefs comes from the initial motive of religion which was to control. (Not in Christ's days....but the civilizations thereafter.) I am a Christian, and I have seen how we can criticize others for their beliefs as well. Some of it may come from wanting to keep others away from danger, yet some could be to maintain a sense of self-righteousness.

Why do people feel the need to crîticize people because of their beliefs? Because people try to push their beliefs on other people who believe differently, perhaps? Once- I was in South Carolina at a buffet dinner party. This very nice girl sat down beside me with her plate and we began talking. She was really friendly and we found out we were the same age and we were having a really good time talking and laughing. I was enjoying her company and thought I might have found a new friend! Then she said to me "Have you been saved?" Not being from America- I didnt know what she was talking about. So she asked me again- more pointedly "HAVE you been SAVED?" Again I just kind of gawked at her and didnt know what to say- what she meant. She got up and left and wouldnt speak another word to me.

@metta_in_mind i agree with him for the most part. True, the other person may in fact be standing in front of a runaway truck for a good reason. The reason which we could never know unless we ask. Pushing said person is exactly that, pushing (against their will). I feel no qualms however if you were to ask that person, "hey, did you know you're about to get killed by a truck?" and if the person says, yes, who are we to stop them against their own will? If they really want to kill themselves, sure you can push them out of the way for now, but they will just find another way to kill themselves when you're not around. That is unless of course you intend to stick around that person 24/7 for the rest of their life to ensure their life. But then you would have to ask yourself, am i sacrificing too much for this person? As for criticism, its just a method of probing another's position on a particular subject. You just have to sort of hope they hold a similar position. If they don't, you could try to convince them with words, if not, then push them. (kidding of course)

What I'm inferring is that when you try to pull others out of the way of your hypothetical truck, they criticize you. With all due respect, when you pull others out of the way of your truck, you are implicitly criticizing them. I agree with what metta _in_mind, wirehangers, and TutherBrother have said.

If someone chooses to stand in front of a hypothetical truck, that's their business, not yours. Most people are aware of their options when it comes to beliefs, they've made up their own minds and it's not up to you to change them. @metta_in_mind Very well said.

i think some people learn things by themselves,no matter what,so it is like giving them space.and whatever outcome would be their responsiblity.and everyone has their own beliefs.and beliefs too chance with time....
