Do you honestly think that a complex social concept such as god or religion would not evolve along with the society in which it is embedded?

The god that made sky flashes developed a personality as stories about him were retold. Rituals formed. Religion itself coalesced. And, as society changed, so did it, until it made the complex, multifaceted institution we're familiar with.

probably a study of a combination of anthropology, archeology, comparative mythology, and history of religion might hold some answers for you. But it can take years, and years. I know. a good place to start might be the Epic of Gilgamesh. Primarily because it is the oldest "book" that was actually written. and then go from there.
