Thinking about the question, I have used imagination to counteract un-stimulating work. Adding columns of numbers I would find myself "rooting" for one or another column to come out better than the other. I would sometimes hope the spreadsheet did not balance, so I could have the extra fun of finding the error. In a factory, the materials used would take on characteristics beyond the inanimate objects they were.

Why do people always look at me funny when I do it? I don't have a video, and people saying how cool it is. They just back away avoiding all eye contact....

If I have some task to do which I find dull, I set my timer for 10 minutes, telling myself I can quit when the timer goes off, if I choose to. Then I work like crazy for 10 minures. Usually I re-set the timer because I'm close to being done and it really wasn't as bad as my dread made it seem.
While waiting in line I make up stories about the other people alwo waiting in line. If its a check-out line my story must include the items a particular person is purchasing. This really makes the time fly.

I do this in my cubicle at work. I have some small i-pod speakers and I turn up a dance song and my whole team takes a "dance break" with me.
