I could honestly could care less. I used to smoke almost a pack a day and now I quit, but I still smoke a cigarette or 2 at parties. I figure its their choice whether they want to smoke or not, and the last thing they need is more grief from me.

I love smokers for there sense of "enjoy life while its here ", But I also watched my mom die a horrible death from smoking related cancer 10 months after her first grandson was born and I know if she could have stopped so that she could spend more time with her grandson she would have and she wished she had never started right up until her death . My mom enjoyed life and smoking played a huge part of it but she wanted everyone to know that when the big C comes it comes at the worst time and doesn't give a crap about your life's plans and dreams .

It's interesting to know very smart intelligent people & then they light up. My mother died prematurely from smoking. I have aunts and uncles that died around age 50 from lung cancer - heavy smokers. Do these people ever consider those they leave behind? I think not because they refuse to stop.

I once heard a tobacco company executive state when asked, "Do you smoke?" - He stated "No, our products are for the ignorant and blacks."
There are some very good reason you shoud smoke. You give your money to already rich tobacco executives. They need their 6-figure bonus money you know. Because you'll not be lucky enough to beat-the-odds and live even a normal life span - you'll surely die early - you'll not be a drain on our social security reserves. So smoke up! The freeways are to crowded anyway.

Interesting that just about 20 years ago, this kind of question would never have come up. Thank god for the media. Now, can we have an opinion pole on "casual drug users", 'people who drink red wine", "people who are too lazy to attend college"?

I think, as a culture, we have a lot more things to worry about.

Smoking is fine by my book, but to an extent. People smoking over a pack a day are wary, anyone who smokes 2 or more, are Faggots.

That's just too much money to blow on a hobby that kills you. Go play laser tag, or buy a puppy, or start up MAGIC THE GATHERING. Anything to keep your mind off cigarettes. Smoking is a leisure and should be treated like one. It's foolish that people get so addicted.
In my personal experience, I smoke a pack of cigs about every week or so. The ONLY reason the pack even gets empty is because I leave it out for my roomate(who is addicted) to grab and smoke. I don't care. I smoke cigs for the casual feeling, the relaxation. Constant smokers probably forgot what that even feels like. Getting your fix is far different than enjoying the luxury of it. Like all drugs really, amazing in small doses, but abuse the substance and you are FUCKED.

I think we can all agree that smokers are the scum of the earth and should be turned into food.

I think that is an individual option, and Im not one to preach to someone else about killing their body. BUT, what pisses me off is that smokers are doing something that is most likely going to cause them cancer. When me, a 24 year old, has a 80% chance of getting cancer in the next 7-10 years because of my family genetic make up. So, smokers are causing cancer on purpose, but I am most likely going to get cancer and have no way to prevent it (like smokers do by not smoking). Kinda pisses me off. Not to say they wont get another type of cancer or another awful illness-they just are increasing their chances of this one.

No, I just really wish they wouldn't for the sake of their well-being. The fact that they smoke ciggs doesn't make them any better or worse than me.

I used to smoke. A lot. I have a lovely Alessi ashtray for visitors, so I`m not going to try to convert anybody. I dont smoke anymore - I finally quit and it was very very hard to do because I was really physically addicted. What worked, was psychoanalysis. I stopped being a daughter, a girl who is eternally 12, and became an adult who is responsible for myself. Add to that the fact that I learned to like myself and didnt want to harm myself anymore. Thats what changed and thats what worked.

It's a vice that has a tremendous detrimental effect on the person, their family, even total strangers in a very broad sphere around them. Not too many people pick the habit up accidentally, or without knowing the risks of addiction, early demise, harming people around them.

I know I shoudln't, but it's very hard to not let this become a factor in considering any kind of relationship with them, personal or professional. It's inevitable that sooner or later their choice is going to have adverse effects on all around them. I still like and associate with lots of smokers. But it's hard to just dismiss this 'inevitablility".

It doesn't show up on their character at all... but it's a repugnant habit. That, and I try not to get too attached to these kinds of people... for the obvious reason of their inevitably premature end.

Smoking is gross but so is a drunk or a crack-head or a sex-junkie... it's an addiction and with all addictions, your body becomes accustom to whatever is being "used" then craves it and then NEEDS it and can't survive properly without it.

Quitting any addiction is EXTREMELY difficult and in most cases, can't be done without TIME and HELP.
@Tristain7 I really think it's addiction.

There was one guy I knew who said he'd never date a smoker, while he's spitting out his chew. Not sure if that's any better.

I've been smoking for about ten years now (scary to say that) and it's a terrible addiction. Coming from a family of alcoholics, I was always worried about following in their footsteps and avoided letting myself become a drunk. Unfortunately, I picked up smoking instead which makes me wonder if alcoholism is the gene, or just addiction in general.

Having been a smoker twice (once for 13 years, once for 9,) I try to be understanding and non-judgmental about it. Some of my best friends smoke.
