Center point on the Moral Compass?

Most of us will never make it to Mother Theresa. Hopefully we'll all manage to avoid Charles Manson. These are the extremes of human conduct. So what lies in between? Is there a name for the center point between the two? Or, for that matter, any objective way to measure?

Could be right now. This is the point where I intersect time, space, and myself. Donno how else to proceed without this vantage, honestly... morally or otherwise.

there was once a chinese philosopher named mencius and he decided that it would be important to find a starting point for morals and a common median between hard universalism and structured relativism. his starting point was comiserations. if you look at society today all things are based off comiseration.

Maybe you want to read the biography of Buddha? He found the middle path.

The center point of THOSE two? Probably the vast majority of humanity, lol. That's assuming you meant to imply that Mother Teresa was saintly... which most people do, even if the evidence is stacked decidedly on the other end... but I'll let it slide.

I think you are being too unfair on people - we are all capable of being as dubious as Mother Theresa - but very few will get to be as genuinely insane as Manson...

if we are looking for a good moral compass point it needs to take some better examples than Theresa as an extreme goodness - Desmond Tutu outranks her for a start.

I am wanting to be more like the blessed offspring of Jonathan Miller and Joan Bakewell though - so I have to aim quite a long way towards Desmond Tutu to get there...

Well, we're all human, even M.T., but that's besides the point. I would have to steal a line from Fallout 3 and go w/ "True Mortal" as what we'd call it. The best judge as to whether we're fulfilling our capacity is you of course. Only you can call into account each day to find out if we were doing 'the right thing.'
