Dreams can have an incredibly deep effect on me, good OR bad. Regardless of whether it's a good or bad dream, I go over it many many times in my head. If it's a bad one, it tends to get silly the more I think and talk about it. If it's a good dream, it just ups my mood! It also helps to share your dreams with a friend (be careful with this one...I've found that as soon as you say "I had this dream..." many people simply tune out).

Used to have the night terrors too!
My cure is to go for a good long run if I can. I allow myself the time to think through the dream during the run. I usually find the fears to be either unjustified, or at least blown way out of proportion. The process of awareness coupled with the endorphin release puts me back on the path of righteousness! Oh, and a big piece of dark chocolate afterwards...what you think I run for my health?!
