How many lives saved is better than Conan back on the air? Should no one ever appeal to another's better instincts? Should any mention of Haiti, or any other less fun thing, be banned from Conan rallies? Right or wrong, people will say such things. Deal with it. Just because someone criticizes me(or you) doesn't mean they are wrong. I'm not on a high horse. I haven't saved the world yet today either.

Yeah, if you took the "what about here" argument, you could take that to the absurdest extreme:
Why help people from Haiti when I could help the USA? Why help people from California when I could be helping my home state of Texas? > why help in Houston when I could be helping in Dallas? > Why help the North Dallas folks when I could help people in Uptown? > Why help people on Hawthorne Ave when I could be helping Prescott Ave? > Why help E. Prescott Ave when I could be helping W. Prescott Ave? > Why help the people in the condo across the street when I could help the people in my own? > Why help the guy in #107 when I could be HELPING MYSELF?
Then let's go the other direction: why help one rich guy when you could help two middle class ones > Why help only the people of California when all the people of the Pacific Northwest needs help > Why help only a limited number of people when you should be SAVING THE WORLD?
In other words, haters have to hate.

@sirmitchell I feel your pain, yo! I posted a similar question a couple days ago, albeit regarding a different cause. I've been organizing relief work in my community on behalf of a local aid organization that sent a plane full of medical supplies and food to Haiti yesterday. I spent the last week and a half soliciting and gathering donations for this cause, and was able to procure 5000 lbs of food and cases of medical and outdoor supplies for the cause. A few of my friends have criticized me for my efforts toward Haiti relief, arguing that with so many problems in our own country I should be focusing my humanitarian efforts closer to home (mind you, they are all too busy shopping and watching TV to pick up the cause they're asking me to advocate for). And, never mind the fact that I'm actively involved in local politics and activism on a regular basis as well.

My response to my own SP question is as follows:
"My so-called friends' comments simply showed me once again how incredibly selfish many American's are. My primary point is that if they don't want to help Haiti, fine, that's their choice. But if they're going to complain at me for helping because they think that *I* should be focusing my efforts on making *their* community a better place, well, to that I say "I picked my cause, now you pick yours!" That's great they want their community to be a better place, so get to it! Get working at the homeless shelter, food bank, parks and rec programs, etc., but don't tell me that I should pick up your cause and set down mine because you're too lazy to do it yourself."
I guess my point is what I've learned from this experience is that people are going to criticize you no matter what you do or for what cause, if you're putting it in the public arena it WILL be criticized. Your choice of a "cause" is just that, YOUR CHOICE. If someone else feels that more rallies should be had and efforts made for a cause of their choosing then they should get off their asses and start organizing, instead of criticizing someone else for not doing it for them. I no longer have tolerance nor patience for their critical apathy.

um.
you CAN support two things at once.
but were you?
the idea of rallying for an entertainer just seems so trivial to me compared to the devastation that's going on in the world right now.

The person who told you that, probably needs to get laid.

Rally for whatever you want. It was Tsunami before, now it's Haiti, tomorrow it'll be something else.
sh*t happens, it doesn't mean we have to stop living and do the things we love.

I agree. The same argument, or one similar, could be made for social reform. 'Why are you spending time and money on improving society in this country (say Australia, because that's where I am), when people around the world are starving?' Well sir, both can and will happen. In fact my money and effort will eventually fix both - I hope. Supporting Conan - who I really don't care about, no offence, I'm in Australia we just don't know much, except that he's being booted out of his TV spot - won't really help Haiti, but both can be done: why not?

haiti got help from george clooney, so why can't you rally for conan?

the people questioning can eff off. if they don't care about conan they can just walk away. what impact does your rally have on their lives? none? okay, then move right along.
also, if there's one thing i've learned from coco it's to not be a cynic. work hard and be nice and good things will happen to you!

You can, you did and you are! I think what you're doing has played a large part in bringing attention to both causes, especially Conan's. Call it whatever you want. People will always talk. The peanut gallery will follow you wherever you go...
