So, this is undoubtedly an over-simplified response, but the obvious downfall seems to be that any political system can only really work if all members are committed, and not being forced by a government to conform. For a group of people all agreeing to live a communistic lifestyle for the betterment of their own community, it seems like this form of government would work.

Communism fails in its premise. If you take from each according to their ability and give to each according to his needs, then pretty soon the able will stop trying and mediocrity will be the best anyone ever achieves. There's no motivation to excel if all you accomplish will be taken by the government and distributed as they see fit (which always includes a great big share for those in power).

I'd just like to place a vote of confidence in Cuba. Castro has his critics, and probably deservedly so, but the social programs of that country have seen incredibly success for that sector of the world.

As far as the socialism(?) vs. Capitalism debate, I'll just add that ALL government derives its power from violence, oppression, and theft. No exceptions, really.

Communism failed when it failed to recognize the basic human desire to dominate others. Capitalism recognises, and subliminally encourages this desire, hence its unbridled 'success'.

Communism -- which is based on "commune" which is based on "common holding, common benefit" is not an "evil" thing. In it's ideal form it capitalizes on strengths while mitigating weaknesses.

Given that all political systems grant power to those in authority and power combined with human nature tends to breed corruption I think we can strike this from the equation as a "constant".
Perhaps the problem has been with implementing it upon societies where there is already a great gulf between the "haves" and "have-nots". To bring everyone to a common level the "haves" have to give up so much and the "have-nots" are seen as receiving something they didn't work for or earn. This breeds animosity.

Communism failed before it was even enacted. It failed when people were convinced that one form of political ideology could be perfect. It failed before communism was ever conceived. We'd be good to learn that lesson from the communists.

That's a good question, man. I got asked the same thing in one of my Government classes.

So, the minds behind it, guys like Marx and Lenin, had a good idea going, didn't they? They were intelligent guys, and frankly, they wanted everyone to more or less be on level ground with everyone else. For me, that's actually not a bad goal to go after. Brings riches to the poor by taking from the rich. Robin Hood stuff.
But when Stalin came to power, the entire system got messed up. He was a corrupt leader, and the entire idea of communism is based around having an extremely intelligent and fair leader. He abused his power with the Gestapo and became too empirical for his own good. He was a skilled orator, which kept the people from revolting initially, and by the time they realized how bad they had it, it was way too late. They'd be screwed if they even hinted at a change in government.
The same thing goes for all communist governments. Cuba, China, North Korea, etc. All of them have/had bad leaders, so they all fail. They come to power because of their ability to orate and "fake-lead" and then they abuse their power.
Sorry, that is an insanely long post and I don't expect anyone to read it, but that's why communism is a crappy way to run a country.
