I have not seen very many plays, but the most recent was "Desire under the Elms." It was in Chicago and had Brian Dennehey and Carla Gugino in it. I only understood about half of the dialoge, they were speaking "old" English I guess. But I must say, I had a great time. I am sure the wine helped a little...The Goodman Theater is the place to go!!!!

If anyone has any other good places in Chicago to share, that would be great.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf is my favorite. It's so well written, the dialogue is incredible. The relationship between George and Martha is fascinating. They love each other but are so cruel to each other.

If we're counting musicals, Blood Brothers. The while thing gives me that funny , shivery feeling you get when something is amazing.

If not, Romeo and Juliet. Romance, comedy, tragedy...what more could you want. Saw it performed by the RSC set in the earlyish 20th century with short knives, suits and cigarettes. Incredible.

Probably "To Kill a Mockingbird." I love the story on so many levels, and I remember my Uncle John playing Atticus in Tulsa several times.

guys and dolls, the main reason being i played "nathan detroit " in high school, first play ever, went really great, and got hired to do the role professionally for a summer at a country club dinner theatre. I spent 4 months of my life ina teal suit brown fadora, and kissing this 20 year old (which at 16 was the coolest thing in the world to me)

The Boys Next Door and Crimes of the Heart -and I love both of them for the same reason - they delve into huamnity in a humorous and thoughtful way. You laugh, you cry, you're moved. That makes for good theater.

No specific play, but you gotta love Shakespeare's dirty jokes. Especially when you're reading them for English class when you're 14 and you point it out to the teacher, who's all "that's inappropriate" and then you're all "you're the one who told us to read it, why are you telling us to read inappropriate things?" and then they kick you out of class.

That never happened to me, but I bet it happened to someone.

Assuming you mean plays that we have not written ourselves, I can still only narrow it down to a list.

1. Hamlet-Wm Shakespeare: because it is one of the best character studies ever written. I can see, however, how that other people might like other Shakespeare better.
2. Streetcar Named Desire, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Summer and Smoke-Tennessee Williams. For a drunken, bitter, old queen, he wrote about some magnificent women. (Hated his later work, btw)
3. Most anything by Horton Foote, Sam Shepherd, or August Wilson.
4. And just because I was lucky enough to see excellent productions of them: Amadeus, A Few Good Men, Shakespeare's R &er; J,A Chorus Line.
I'll stop now. I could go on all night...:-)
