It's interesting to note that hypocrisy comes from the same root as acting a part in a play: pretending. Today it tends to mostly apply to those people who say they have a belief but their actions belie that belief. It's simply not a matter of white lies, since those little lies are based on another value system of not offending in a social situation.. People like Roy Kohn, J Edgar Hoover, and any number of clergy persons were more likely to be hypocirites. Jesus called out the Pharisees as hypocrites. @1more

So, yes, anyone CAN be true and honest, no, everyone isn't but there are those that are.
I would agree with that statement.

I feel I am less hypocritical than many of my fellow nation's happy peers... but I suspect everyone thinks that... I do at least practice most of what I preach so that is what I would claim as supporting evidence for my statement... and its too damn easy to say "Oh yes I know I am a hypocrite" - and then do bugger all about it...

We can, but it takes a frightful amount of work! And hypocrisy can be so easy and SO satisfying (at least in the short run). But in the end it places all your friends and neighbours not side-by-side and hand-in-hand, but preciarously clinging to a ladder where all others are either above or below us -- and we need to climb over others or be climbed over ourselves to get anywhere.

Being true and honest is fine and good, but can also hurt feelings and wound friends. White lies come to our lips for a reason. Is that being hypocritical? Probably. Is it necessarily bad? Probably not. Being hypocritical about the important things is different. And wrong.
