question

Do the bad things done in the name of religion blind you to the positive things religion contains?

Often when discussing religion some people will throw forth simple generalizations about the nature of religion, such as it being the cause of all wars and so forth... A closer look will show, in my view at least, that the main cause of war is greed in one form or another whether it be for power, land, or oil. Now, Religion has many times fallen pray to the people who would use it for their own selfish needs but that does not in itself condemn religion as an institution. However I also want to point out that there are of course social principles in most religions that may have been useful at the time of revelation but that are redundant in modern society. This being said I would like to know whether those that seem to be against organized religion are also incapable (hyperbole) of appreciating the beauty that I and many others have been able to find in the worlds religions.
