am I the only one to mention artists not from the USA and UK? I do think the best music does come from these two nations but I somehow feel we need to expand the vision a little.

the greatest ones are the ones who changed the direction. the beatles made rock famous the smiths created indie bob dylan made it political and smart black sabbath made it dark led zeppelin made it mysterious run dmc made rap mainstream nirvana made it simple the list can go on. but if they didn't change where it was going, i don't think they can be considered "one of the greats"

I mean, to the couple of people that have mentioned influence, You can't leave out certain rap artists. Sure you may not like them, but some of them have heavily influenced the music scene. Eminem, for example, has some extremely personal lyrics, when you look past their vulgarity. Nas also is an amazing artist. And then besides rap--since it isn't exactly my forte, either: Animal Collective is said to be one of the most influential groups in years. My personal choices would have to be: The Beatles Bob Dylan Frank Sinatra Modest Mouse and then I love Ra Ra Riot, Portugal. The Man, and Nightmare of You but I don't think any of them would be called the greatest bands ever.

if you have to stick to one and it has to be a band - then boring though it may seem - it is boring because it is obviously true - The Beatles. once you expand into the many... good lists below - The Kinks are one of mine... Talking Heads New York Dolls Sex Pistols (like 'em or loathe 'em - influential and great in their way) Cream Beach Boys definitely, (glad you mentioned them Pope, Brian Wilson was a sound sculptor extraordinaire) Frank Zappa and the Mothers of invention Bob Marley & Wailers Los Lobos Michael Jackson (& Quincy Jones) King Sunny Ade and his African Beats. Nasrat Fatah Ali-Khan Sweet Honey in the Rock. Fleetwood Mac

Influential? Without going too terribly far back, George and Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Glenn Miller (or one of those big bands), Charlie Parker, Big Mama Thornton, Elvis, The Beach Boys, Smoky Robinson/Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, Queen. I'm sure there are other choices, and I was going on who influenced things the most. And I pretty much stopped listening to rock when Kiss started. Went a different direction since then. [wasn't that dude on the old Andy Griffith show? Pink Floyd the Barber? {jk}]
