I think it was one of the last times people actually felt like they were heard. That they were within reach of making change. That movement was one of power that they felt being all together. They understood that if they worked together and stood for what they felt was right they could get it done.

I am old and I don't remember this in 1959 or 1960. NOBODY, not even old beatnics looked scruffy like this picture. Go to PBS and ask them. I didn't see protests until the 1966 bra burnings. I burnt my bra and then went home and put on another bra.

this is an interesting start to get an overview for your paper. All I really remember (but remember there is a gap in most of my memory from 1969-1976...) was that they were just a little scary in the Black Panther sense.
