im not sure of the point your trying to make here, but like i said before this argument is against church history and not biblical teachings. say what you will about religion, but Christianity as you should know offers much more than anything your disbelieve in it can. lest just hone in on what your arguments should be. you want to argue against religion then argue the religion. not its feeble institutions. argue at the core the teachings.is it false or invalid. your best way to do that is to that is to learn what it teaches to one that believes it. not feeble argument like the bible is missing stuff cause man wrote it. that's an assumption argument. if you want to argue messiah face it your only arguing Jesus. Muhammad is a proclaimed prophet you want to argue religion argue his. religious war, Muhammad takes the cake. well take it as you will, but i think if you address the heart of these issues we can open a better dialogue which is what i like. so what did you want people to address on this forum?

This makes secularists smile an faithful folks green in the face. Set-ups like this are not courteous. And boy are they played out. I see these "arguments" equal to a highschooler taunting a middle-schooler. Sure they may think they know more, but in the end, theyre all just a bunch of kids pointing fingers to themselves and others simultaneously, acting as such.

biased set up? - by that do you mean I have stated a strong opinion? or that the debate was set up by having a famous politician (in the UK) and an Archbishop as the weak opponents of some people with strong arguments..? I am open to all offers of intelligent argument, seedypete - just tired of the boring set ups of: "since God is proven to be three"... or "do you prefer heaven or hell" or "which is the perfect religion?" or.... and so on and so on - all coming from the culturally incredibly biased/slanted world view that isn't looking at the questions that should come before those assumptions of Church creed/dogma norms are being made... I have no argument with those who find a faith - I am interested in how they came there - I have a faith of sorts myself - much discussed on other threads... and if a person's faith is glibly inherited, or found by a route that ducks questions and avoids evidence... then I tend to want to blow a big raspberry... it can't kill, it can't even hurt the confident person, it might wake a few up...

I do like the picture. well, I don't know what to say. I just looked at the recent collective and there it was...more Jesus and God questions. I'm pretty much done with them. but, if I feel moved to respond, its generally with fact. It's really hard to argue fact. and its real easy to argue fiction. I personally like the Bible (I have several different versions) and, it actually has some good reading in it. But I like Greek and Roman plays as well, and I like good movies, etc. I think you have to look at all of it in the context and period in which it was written to get it to make any real sense. I enjoyed those debates, too. Though I did find Anne's voice kind of grating. I think Hutchins and Fry made some good points, and I don't think they were arguing against religion, I think Stephen Fry even said so at one point, but they did question some historical facts. I don't think anybody could have answered those, Roman Catholic or not. Anyway, I'm ignoring the Jesus and God questions for now.

I enjoy this site but am exhausted by this banality of endless attacks and defenses of something so personal and impossible to prove or disprove let the wheat and tares grow together then get in your popemobile...and wave like you mean it!

Yes the Church has a lot to answer for and yes they've committed unspeakable acts of violence such as the crusades and the salem witch trials just to name a few but but haven't all the other major religions things always get carried too far it's human nature there will always be zealots and those who follow them. Jews tried to kill the christians christians tried to kill muslims and jews and they've all tried to kill each other at some point but that doesn't mean it's false it means the followers are still human and imperfect

Love the photo, it rocks. Honestly, I see the word Bible and I pass the question by. I have made my arguments again and again about how yes the big bad book is important because it has been made important by history's standards but I really do wish that people would stop using it to attempt to prove history as being right. People conveniently forget that the bible was beaten into peoples heads throughout history, Spanish inquisition comes to mind. The funny thing about the Catholic church is that the communion of saints is just a revamping of the Roman gods. Its actually what makes me smile when I hear devote Catholics talking about how Hindus are going to hell because they have so many gods and then they go light a candle to the patron saint of whatever. That always gets me grinning from ear to ear.

i love that picture too, but again the topic is dull and overdiscussed. the catholic church has a lot to answer for, but it is filled with good people who are trying to do good things. i am jealous of faith, because i have none. while i don't always agree with the religious, as a matter of fact, i hardly ever agree with the religious, i do wish i believed as strongly in something.

I can see what you are saying, completely. I can also see where some may take offense to the way you started this conversation. But I also, see where that's just another way to avoid the very good points you bring. But isn't that where alot of this mess began in the 1st place? Missing the point of the message. And I am ready to talk about it. That's why I came to this site.

"PLEASE listen to me! No, you don't understand. I'm so desperate to feel adequate or powerful or effective that I'm willing to make an entire career out of arguing semantics with people whose minds are just as closed as mine, in a way that reeks of arrogance, so as to literally (or even intentionally?) ensure that I never change anyone's mind. After all, if religious fundamentalists were no more, I would have nothing to write about, and would become poor." You're not the only one who can be sarcastic. :-P Those anti-religion people don't help anything. Being loudly and strongly opposed to ANY other group of people, and denouncing their value or their intelligence or their equality, is not a mature way of doing things. The people who have debates like these (I admit to not watching the youtube videos) are like children playing tug-of-war over a plastic shovel in a sandbox.
