Actually I never cared for Scrubs. I dont watch Ugly Betty cause I always disliked that derogatory title. So those are two examples of how a person doesn't have to watch the show, or some shows or no (any) shows. I am concerned about how much children are watching of what was intended as an adult offering since syndication allows cable/networks to broadcast CSI type shows that portray murdered women, scantily clad and brutalized at the hands of men. Oops, got off the subject and onto to my soap box. I always remind myself that comedy shows have writing staffs numbering in the 20's and 30's. That means that no one in "real" life is that funny or clever unless you have a script full of one liners.

Because they're real and you can relate to them. And truth is way more freaking hilarious than fiction.

I think we love these shows because... the characters show a bit of us as we really are. Imperfect. I do notice that the antics are becoming more and more outrageous. The behavior might makes us laugh, but would we want our friends, relatives and co-workers to behave in the same way?

I think its because it's fantasy. I love always sunny but i realize that no one can live the way they do and act the way they do without horrible repercussions. It's fun to watch a show and now that no matter what they do, after that 30 minutes, their lives get reset and are ready to go next week. "I wanna live like you Charlie. I wanna be pathetic and desperate and ugly and hopeless"

Some other shows that I like to watch, but would not want to hang out with the characters 1. Friends 2. Will and Grace 3. Nip/Tuck 4. The Office but I wouldn't mind at all to hang out with the characters from NCIS, Glee, or Are You Being Served. I think on the ones where the characters irritate us, we like them because we know them--and are generally happy not to be them.

Morality isnt funny. political correctness isnt funny. like any great controversial show, i guess the idea is to be more and more horrible with each new episode. The only problem with this approach is that I dont see how "The Gang" can get much worse. Heres hoping that they will find a way.

ANOTHER IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY POST!!!!!!! ha ha, i posted the dayman vs nightman last week, and that got me all excited. i guess the reason that we are all in love with "the gang" is that they live in a world in which there are no consequences, and no real need for thought. they can just pretty much do as they please without really having to worry about what might happen. for instance: Mac and Dennis get bored, what do they do? they decide to go on a "manhunt" to get Cricket and "teabag" him. Or, Dennis and Dee decide that they don't feel like working at the bar anymore, so they get addicted to crack so they can collect welfare. The reason that show is so appealing to the audience, (besides the fact that it's extremely funny) is the fact that all of us sometimes wish that we could just do that, but obviously we can't, because we all think ahead as to what might happen

The previews looked good - I just never watched any of the shows! I don't appreciate Earll, The Office, never saw Modern Family, etc. I guess I say they are good without ever seeing them.

I think that shows like IASIP are funny because they are generally so unpredictable. I find with most sitcoms and comedy shows that I know exactly what is going to be said and done, because they're all following a standard guideline of "here's how to be funny" just like every other show. I can honestly say that I watch every episode of IASIP and have no clue what is going to happen, and the fact that it's so ridiculous and original makes it funny to me. Seinfeld, as was said below, is so easy to relate to and just really goes after the subtleties of life and makes you laugh at them.

I'm pretty sure the IASIP gang is about 100x more depraved and amoral than the crew on Seinfeld, for example. Come to think of it, they're by far the least respectable bunch ever to grace television, in my view. Anyway, all the shows you mentioned are hilarious, but I think in slightly different ways. Seinfeld is funny because it's easy to relate to the characters and you can chuckle because you might have done/thought similarly in a situation. Plus the writing is witty stuff. IASIP just revels in how horrible these folks are and to what ridiculous lengths they'll go to satisfy their egos and desire to be intoxicated. I think the answer of why such stuff is funny is simply because it's not oridnary. It's hyperbole (sometimes to the extreme) that takes us away from everyday life and let's us live vicariously through people we'll never be like (and might not even want to be like).
