People who have smoked have lived to be over 100, which is longer than I want to live. Old Shammans and medicine women and men smoke. The great Sherpas of Mt Everest smoke while hiking a big mountain in sandles with his supplies and the white mans supplies on his back. I don't smoke to be cool, but some people do yes. Natural tobacco and pot, along with other blends of herbs will bring less harm to you when smoked than other things Corp America has chemically altered to get rich. They destroyed tobacco just like they destroyed sugar. Real maple suryup is good for you. Pancake syrup is not. Smoking is not the evil. People who have bigger problems like obesity and diabetes (poor blood flow) should not smoke. But if you balanced work, laughter, dancing, sex, diet, and yes smoking you will feel better than people who live in fear that any one thing might kill them. Like other things fear also is very bad for the imune system which is why cancer thrives. Enjoying life will always be the best medicine. As a disclaimer I am not a doctor nor do I promote smoking.

what you dislike and fear finds you. I, for example, detest guys who rush n a relationship. 3 out of 3 guys I meet tends to rush. it is safe not to fear cancer even if you dont smoke. if you wont smoke dont base your decision on fear. but dont smoke, of course.

Just one quick point - smoking kills more people through heart disease than cancer - and there are chewers and sniffers as well as smokers - people really do get hooked to that dizziness like dumbass kids... but to stick more to your original question - which is it seems, fundamentally about the knowledge of a habit being dangerous in some way that may attract people - (or appearing to be dangerous - and thus cool) I know I started smoking because it was something older cooler people did - at the age of eight I was frantic to belong to that group - (only dropped it at twenty when it suddenly seemed stupid.) it made me feel sick but I knew that was because I was uncool - not because the chemicals I had just inhaled would have killed me instantly if they had been injected into a vein (mainlining nicotine anyone? - of course not, you would be dead) eating candy/fatty food doesn't fit the same bill - anorexia is related to the coolness of being thin - the formula doesn't work the same way... it is more pernicious... Food is an essential need - the capitalist consumer culture we have developed in the west has made the instant gratification aspect of fast food combine with the brain's tendencies to be fooled by sugars to a triumph of obesity over common sense. - the addiction factor of the mind saying - "I want more of what I am used to enjoying" being a huge problem... gave up smoking donkeys years ago - its not cool still eat a tad too much - but hey I'm fitter than average. be cool?... maybe...have fun, grow old in love, smile a lot.

I think people missed the part where it said "things that people enjoy OR make them cool". No i don't think eating candy makes you cool :| Well..depends what candy you're eating.

I grew up where pretty much everyone around me smoked and to this day I've never even tried it, not even once (and neither has my husband). Beyond hating the smell of cigarette smoke and the physical repercussions, I think it just looks ugly when people smoke. I see seemingly attractive people and as soon as they light up, everything changes. As far as why we have tobacco, I don't think it was created for people to smoke it. Think about it, there are millions of things in this world that are in their natural form that we may never manipulate to use in alternative ways. I think it's just happenstance that humans figured that you could smoke it. And people absolutely feel an edge that keeps them smoking. My little sister is a perfect example. She a. feels like she won't fit in with her friends if she doesn't and b. has told me point blank smoking is worth the risk because she thinks quitting automatically means she'll get fat. I remember kids in middle school sneaking away with their parent's cigarettes and smoking one between a group of like six kids. It seemed pointless and really, really lame. And I don't think people think eating fast food makes them cool. Or candy. Maybe children eat candy because they think other kids will want the candy they have and by default they'll be cool, but only for a short period of time.

Used to be a 2 packs of Marlboro/day gal. I gave it up 10 years ago. The reason we smoke isnt really because it tastes good. It has nicotine in it which is a strongly addictive substance.

I would totally smoke if it didn't give me cancer or any other horrible illness (you know what happenes when the good fairy takes one horrible thing away - they always replace it with some new horrible thing - so always clearly state your desires). It smells great, like cloves - pipes - some cigars. Yum. Miss my CLOVES!!!!!

I like pipes. As a kid, I used to love blowing bubbles in a bubble pipe (especially because tobacco was *so* taboo in my family). Plus there was this math teacher I had in school who smoked a pipe, and I always thought he smelled absolutely fabulous. I used to think up questions to ask... just to go up and smell him. How creepy is that? So anyway, if I ever smoke anything, it'll be a pipe. All the way. Gimme the jacket, the Queen Anne chair, a toasty fire, and the slippers, too... while we're revelling in hypotheticals.

I just quit smoking a month ago... I still crave cigarettes like crazy but they're f*****g expensive and i'm to cheap to keep spending money on them (plus I has swine flu and couldn't breath and walk at the same time... hard to smoke if you can't breathe, which promted finnally sticking with quitting). On to the why- I started smoking on June 23rd 2006... odd that I remember the exact day right? Not so much really, my father in law died but at the time my husband and I hadn't gotten married yet. I was in the Navy and since my (then future) father in law wasn't legally my father in law I couldn't come home for the funeral. People kept handing me cigarettes to keep me calm... which helped. By the end of the day I got sick of feeling like a bum and bought my own pack. Since quitting I have to say I liked me better when I smoked but I suppose that feeling will subside when I find some other way of coping with stress that doesn't involve filling my lungs with smoke... God I miss smoking... I had a dream last night I was smoking a cigarette... secretly... it was awsome.
