This is Your Mother Calling: Why Haven't I Heard From You?

You may be familiar with the photographic compositions of Chris Jordan, or heard him give a TED talk. His work illustrates the cumulative effects of our individual choices. <br><br> In the above image, the decomposing body of an albatross shows the trash it consumed. Not a single piece of plastic was placed or arranged in any way. This is the actual stomach content of the baby bird. What is especially shocking is that this bird is from the Midway Atoll, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 2000 miles from the nearest continent. There is a huge garbage gyre swirling in the middle of the ocean, estimated to be twice the size of Texas. <br><br> Everything we do matters. It all adds up, for good or bad. How are you managing your impact?

We use green bags when shopping (when we remember), we've changed our light bulbs to the energy saving ones, we wash our clothes in cold water, we have cars with decent gas mileage, and I'm vegetarian, which not only helps out the animal population, but it conserves energy in preparation. We also try to refinish/repurpose old furniture and stuff when we no longer want/need it in its current function.

This makes me unbelievably sad. My mom always taught me to return things in better condition than when you borrowed it. Could the same logic not be applied to our "borrowed" time here on earth? Can we not be selfish and realize that there are people to come after us and need to experience the beauty that is our mother earth?

I try to manage my impact, but I always feel like I'm not doing enough. My boyfriend and I have turned our laundry room into a mini recycling center, seperating glass, cans, paper, paperboard, batteries, plastic, and everything else. We take it to the community recycling center once a week. We use green bags. I buy phosphate free detergents in recyclable bottles. I will only wash in cold water. I refuse to use the heated dry option on the dishwasher. And yesterday, I bought a Yaris, so my gas consumption will go down. Even with all of this, I almost have a panic-attack everytime I think about the environment. I curse myself for using bleach based products to disinfect my counter tops and cleand the shower and toilet. I freak if I get a mailer that uses way to much packaging for the "free gift" they've sent me to persuade me to use their services. I feel bad that I don't have any money to give to NRDC when they email me. I'm a conflicted environmentalist with a panic disorder. It gets stressful, but I'm going to try to concentrate on what I do right.
