i think lots of things are better than sex. sex is complicated, and leads to more complications. The only things that you get from it, that you can't give to yourself, is a baby and problems.

ah, the old pushing a car with a chain question... There was an elderly couple sitting on their porch, rocking. MAN: well, darlin', I guess today is our 60th wedding anniversary. {the WOMAN slaps him hard across the face and continues rocking.] MAN: What was that for? WOMAN: 60 years of bad sex! [They continue rocking in silence for a moment. The MAN slaps the WOMAN hard across the face.] WOMAN: what was that for? MAN: Knowing the difference... DISCLAIMER: Do not try this at home. No elderly people were harmed during this production. It is not an indication that slapping each other is okay.

I used to sex as this thing - separate - intense ...thing what a relief to be no longer trapped by those teenage hormone hangovers... being in love with someone, and I mean really loving - the sex just flows as part of a life experience that is largely joyful - yes the intensity of a great orgasm can be truly fantastic. but then learning the tantra and resisting orgasm for an hour or more... now that can blow your brain apart... but putting it out there in discussion, as a thing - like pornography does, then sex is as poor, in comparison to love, as those two pathetic burgers are to a varied personally tailored five course dinner by Raymond Blanc (of Le Manoir), every night for life...

Also, are we talking about one night stands, porn acting, teen sex challenge, sex for ulterior motives, love at 20, love at 70?

Whatever gets you through the night(or day). Obviously sex is top 5 on virtually anybody's list. Given that we are relentlessly bombarded with the need not just for sex, but perfect sex, for marketing purposes, it's kind of hard to assess the 'natural' status of sex in a modern society. All animals desperately want to have sex. Sexual species that don't have sex, don't last long. Age, health, prospects, proficiency, priorities, religion, philosophy.. many factors determine where a particular individual would honestly rank sex. Your question implies a search for a general answer, unless you are virtual voyeur, where a single legitimate answer is not available.

I was going to say weed. Right off the top of my head. Now Im not so sure. Its really close. But look at it this way- Sex is never going to be as amazing as it was when I first started doin it, and im never going to get as high as i did when i first started smoking. So maybe the experience of discovering something new and wonderful for the first time is really the thing that is better than sex

not those burgers, but burgers with toasted rolls, fireworks (good ones), brownies with vanilla ice cream

I agree - those hamburgers are NOT it! Sometimes things are. I have fibromayalgia, so I'm often in pain, and the idea of sex can be quite stressful. Sometimes a nice massage or cuddle session with my husband is at least just as good. Sometimes sleep or a good workout is also at least as nice on a physical level.

... Sometimes i'd rather have a back rub... but then again I have a bad back so sometimes as great as sex is the thought of my husband literally jumping my bones just makes them ache worse.

"Are some things better than sex?" I wouldn't know. In all likelihood, I never will.

It's weird to me that women's orgasms are in theory more intense than men's, yet it seems that most men place more importance on sex than women do. I know a lot of women who would rather have chocolate than sex. I think it's biology. As I get older, I get farther and farther away from the drive to procreate, so sex is nice, but not THAT important to me. Men, who don't lose the drive to procreate, have a hard time understanding this.
