What is the definition of a chair?

This question was brought up by a teacher i has in high school, the first time heard it it seemed like a joke, but as we spent a good portion of the class discussing it, nobody in class was able to come up with one specific statement as to what a chair was. It sounds like a simple question, but if you think about it there seems to be no easy way to narrow it down into one definition. what about the chairs without legs, or the kind in the shape of eggs, or a tree stump, do they all qualify as "chairs" simply because you are able to use them as a seat? if you are going by those standards then couldn't you say that anything you use as a seat is considered a chair? So in your own words, what would you say is the definition of a chair?

What do you think?
