I do think people who murder should be killed, but not because of retribution, but for that murders soul. In the Baha'i Faith we believe that in order to be redemed in the eyes of God for murder you must be killed (quick and painlessly as possible, by the proper authorities)

Men like Saddam Hussein know what their doing is wrong and are just out for power. He had members of his own political party shot in the middle of a meeting because they were doing something that threatened his power. Hussein was certainly not a very religous man, having been known for spending time with prostitutes, though very likely they were actually sexual slaves to pimps. Men like Saddam Hussein are all over the middle east and the third world, military dictators that commit mass murder to keep the populace under control. The simple fact of the matter is that he had stopped being a righteous anything long ago. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. If there is a God and heaven he is far from it. And when he was hung you can garantee that he didn't want to die.

i feel that human beings who can willingly and knowingly kill another person, through body or spirit, deserves to be put to death themselves. of course, it should be as swift and painless as possible. there is no excuse for torturing anothing human being, irregardless of what they've done in life.

I don't believe any human being has a right to kill another human being - ever - except in self defense.

Typical American arrogance , why can't we just learn to accept other peoples customs and beliefs . It was not against Iraqi law for Sadam to do what ever he wanted . Turn a blind eye I say ! As far as death as a "punishment" thats funny , it doesn't even hurt.

Orange9mm, do you really think the purpose of this forum is to change your mind? I always leaned towards it being a way to understand where others are coming from so we can all go ahead together. The death penalty is a sticky one, because there is the belief (mistaken or not) that it somehow proves we are merciful. As a Christian I believe that God is the epitome of mercy but even He acknowledges there are natural consequences for bad actions taken and left unrectified. Mercy is good, in it's proper place. Some acts are predaceous upon the society and having mercy on the society perhaps wins out over having mercy on the one -- especially if it would seem clear the individual would do the same again in the same circumstances and feel justified in it -- or lead others to do the same. Sometimes removing someone from the equation for all time is the most merciful thing for all involved. It's a little like keeping a deadly plague virus around. Whatever the justification it just seems to me like a very bad idea. It may be controllable while properly contained. But is the risk of it getting loose worth it? (Remember that in the case of people, the original perpetrator does not have to get loose for that seed of evil to spread to others).

This is one of those issues that's pointless to discuss. It's like abortion: they're not going to change my mind, and I'm not going to enlighten them. There are fundamental beliefs that won't be shaken in any forum. It's like the previous discussion of athiesm and the existence of god or jesus. Basically, whatever makes you happy---believe that.
