don't get in to much of a panic, they don't last forever. they only last until you die. that's a lot less time than forever. i think its really funny how some people can get all bent out of shape over a tattoo "ruining your body" but they're 30lbs over weight, or they smoke, or something way worse for your health than a tattoo. people are strange

I'm getting some this summer too! Off to college as well! My mother can't yell at me once I'm across the country. I already have the sketches prepared and a deal with the tattoo artist and everything. There are 7. Not all at once though. I'm not a masochist. But I've heard that they hurt like heck unless you have a high tolerance for pain. So, be prepared. And don't just go anywhere. One of my friends got an infection. It was nasty. So, be careful.

I'm pretty covered in tattoos - both arms sleeved, chest, ribs, back...My first one was when I was pretty young; 16 or so. To be honest, there are very few things that you would be able to get that are foolproof. My suggestion to you is to think of the things that matter to you the most, and will matter to you regardless of how your beliefs and ideas inevitably WILL change. I have some tattoos that are representative of Christianity, but I'm not a Christian anymore. Sometimes I wish I didn't have some of them. However, others, not as much. I might not believe in sin and Jesus and the resurrection, etc; but I DO still very much believe in loving others, peace and many other things that might be found within Christianity and many, many other schools of belief. Just think. Don't necessarily slap a cross on your arm because you're a Christian, for example (or a star and crescent for Islam, or an aum for Hindu, etc, etc). Think about WHY you are what you are and get creative about expressing those particular (and personal) beliefs. Obviously this isn't just limited to Christianity or any other religion, it's simply an example that I have personally experienced.

I have six tattoos. First when I was 18 on my ring finger a cross, a scorpion, a heart, a fleur de lis tramp stamp, and my 2 Mickey Mouses on my feet with a circle and triangle to remind me to keep my head in the clouds and my feet on the ground. Each one has a profound meaning to me, and they are ritualistic FYI the feet and the finger were the most painful. lower back sort of tickled I did have one removed it was initials (stupid stupid stupid) My advice is make sure the person you see is clean, certified, an artist, and that you have seen a lot of their work. I would suggest that you print off a picture of what you want and carry it in your wallet as well as hang one on your wall, if you don't get sick of it in say a year, get it done. oh and yellow doesn't stick.

I'm not against them, they are just not for me. It's a personal preference. I don't down anybody for tatoos, though.

I do have tattoos... and I use to be an aspiring tattoo artist... but then I joined the navy... but that's another story. I have 3 tattoos... soon to be 4. My first was a grape vine on my upper arm when I was 18. I had wanted it since I was 14 because I had grape vines back home and I had to move and leave them behind so by getting the tattoo is a reminder of my vines and how happy they made me. Unforchunately... I let my then boyfriend, now husband pick out the tattoo shop... I wanted the tattoo artist to freehand it so it would be something even more special... that back fired a bit because the artist said he knew what he was doing but the vine on my arm looks nothing like grape vines and it has thorns on it... clearly looks more like a rose vine or something and the comment that I get from everyone who sees it is "is there a rose at the top?" So, having a clear idea of what you want and having meaning behind it is only half the battle- the other half is making sure your tattoo artist knows what they're doing. I have a koi fish on my thigh- this time I drew it up myself. I traded all my tat equipment for it... again the artist didn't quite understand what I wanted and when the green soap began washing the stencil off they started drawing their own interpretation of my design. I waited two weeks after having the outline done before trying to get it colored... after two weeks though they dropped off the face of the planet. Again- a reputable artist is a must. I got a tat after the vine but before the koi. The one tattoo that i'm happiest with. A tribal dragon in the shape of a C on my leg. The entire tattoo is smaller than a quarter and not only did I draw up the design myself I also tattooed it myself. As far as people bleeding alot durring the tattoo process that depends on the person. I don't bleed much at all. I tattooed one of my husband's buddies from high school- he bled like a faucet. As far as pain goes- that depends alot on where you want your tat. If an area is more muscular it usually doesn't hurt as bad. Anything over bone or alot of fat tends to hurt more. That's just a generalization, everyone is differant. I tattooed a tiger on my husband's side over his ribs and he's not the least bit ticklish but i'll be damned if he didn't squirm and giggle the entire time.

I do not tattoo. I can't think of anything so wonderful I would like it permanently stamped into my skin. Sorry, I must be a wussie.

I do tattoo! Addicted, that's a downfall. My daughters tattoos a lot. I would tattoo more but don't have the benjamins for it. That's another downfall, tatoos can leave you broke. Oh, and for the most part they don't hurt as much as some people say. Especially if you're in tune with your endorphins; then they even become pleasurable.

I've yet to get a tattoo. But I want one. Dang parentals. Lol I think they are a very personal and close to heart way of expressing yourself. I encourage you not to be objective about getting one due to what others with think. I'm from a very conservative background, but am not in the least conservative myself. I have people day in and day out argue that they aren't biblical. However, the biblical references in their context do not hold up in today's society. In the day, they were spoken against because it brought great physical distruction (much, much more than todays practicing) and was acompanied by the worshiping of other gods. So, if that was or is a concern of yours, I hope that helps? I just think they're amazing, myself. I want to get a tree on my leg, with lots of sentimental details, and roots that go down my ankle.

I personally have 4, and I got mine at age 17 and 21. However, I do not recommend this for anyone. i lost my mom at 15 so 3 of my tattoos are for her and are extremely personal and mean a lot to me. I see way too many of my friends also getting ones because they like mine and they tend to get things like music notes "because they like music" or flowers around their ankle because"they love flowers" those are not good reasons to me. I go by the rule that you should think about your design and what means the most to you in your life for several years before you actually get the tattoo. If you are going to get stars, or peace signs, or something like that, dont bother cause that is just a fad at the moment, does it look cool, yes sometimes, but its just not personal. I am a huge advocate for the art of tattoos, but it really has to be something special to you, but also dont limit yourself, if you want it small and you are with the tattoo artist and they have an idea but its larger, you should go for it cause it will be more unique and mean more to you in the long run.

I have two tattoos! My first was 4 days after my 18th birthday. The parents were in Mexico, my best friend and I had our train tickets, the design was drawn and we were ready to go! I got to the parlor and they thought I had a fake ID because I "looked like I was 12", so after we settled that little misunderstanding he got started. It didn't take too long, both of mine are silhouettes. I am not sure if I can word this to make perfect sense, but it was a bit painful and uncomfortable, yet it didn't exactly hurt. It was a weird feeling for certain. My suggestion is to pick a tattoo and think about it for a few months or some significant period of time. Sometimes people get excited with a design, get the tattoo, and then regret it later when they realize that it lacks meaning and thought. Either way, for me a tattoo represents a time in my life. My first reminds me of who I was when i got it, and I'm ok with that. The second one I have holds more meaning and will always represent something specific to me. Good luck! Have fun!

make sure it's something you can deal with for the rest of your life!! :) i like my first tattoo, i wish i would have made it bigger, but it was a first tattoo and something i picked off the artists wall. it doesn't tickle though-so make sure you can handle some moderate pain. as long as it's something you really really want, it will be work it in the end! good luck! :)

No it's definitely not something I would want to do because 'everyone else is getting one,' I don't actually know that many people getting/have them. I would get this (http://www.impawards.com/2003/posters/big_fish.jpg" target="_blank">http://www.impawards.com/2003/posters/big_fish.jpg), but just the words/tree, you know, none of the background. This movie is very important to me and played a huge part in my growing up through high school, and I get a lot of my philosophies from it. And I would probably get it on the back of my right shoulder, just because that's where I always imagined it!
