If we want to hold true to the "religion separate from state" crap, then the government needs to stop interceding.. Too got men got jail time in my state recently because they allowed prayer in school. I mean, really? If you don't agree with someone, then disagree. But don't have them put in jail for expressing themselves. I don't understand this concept. That's a little off key from this question, but that's been bouncing around in my head all day. Figured I'd let it out.

and another thing...to those who say Xmas is taking the Christ out of Christmas, chi has always been used as a symbol (abbreviation, if you will) for Christ. So, would saying GE take the "electric" out of that company that owns all the television stations? Just asking.

Isn't there a difference between intolerance and political correctness? I've always tried to use the method small children are taught about good touch/bad touch. You can tell whether something is said or done with malice intended. If it's bad touch, kick and scream and call for help. If not, it's crying wolf. I very recently deleted a contact from Facebook because although proclaiming to be a fierce advocate of several social issues, this person twists in the wind to calm people down and not offend their other contacts. If you take a stand of any kind, there will be someone who will be challenged, if not offended. This person wants things changed, but is more concerned about the feelings of those who have blocked change. If you're not willing to assume the consequences of taking a stand, perhaps you should stay seated. Or become a politician yourself. @steveP > Offended by "Happy Holidays"? If I had been your waitress friend, I'd be inclined to sneeze on his salad. :-)

Absolutely! We've perfected the art of having a thin skin and taking offense to things offered up innocently, with no intent to offend! "I've been offended" is a choice. And it's a choice that is destructive to the individual, to relationship in general and to the society as a whole. It causes one to close up to shut up to put their head down and not say or do anything for fear some individual celebrating their skin-like-tissue-paper will pick it up and take it to town as a show of how weak they are, how offended they are. One only has control over their intentions in offering something up on the stage of the world. You have no control over how others will take it. Don't set out to intentionally be insensitive or rude. And if you find out in some unforseen way you have, own it and make reparation. But that is your task to do -- not someone else's to tell you you have to do. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. Even a butt-headed one. Including yourself. And voicing them is how we learn and grow and interact. And who wants to stop learning and growing and interacting? Everyone has the right to err and learn. Shutting down this process with the fear of political incorrectness is to deny everyone the same right to live and learn and grow.

Political correctness is a breed of collective stupidity. If we would act with civility and respect toward each other, and not be in such a hurry to be offended, we wouldn't have to concern ourselves with such idiocy.

I think that in general we are too politically correct. However you really have to understand your audience. There are things that are perfectly OK to discuss with some people, that other people would take offense to. It's just common sense. When you don't know someone, just be PC. I worked with a Jewish girl at a restaurant. It was the middle of December, and she went to greet a new table. She greeted them with Happy Holidays, and was appalled when a man at the table said "Why don't we say what we're all thinking? Merry Christmas!" She didn't want to embarass him in front of his friends so didn't say anything, but was kind of upset about it all night. It's people like this that do not think before they talk that are not PC enough.

Yep. I heard awhile back that there was a public school in Chicago that took jello off their menu because a muslim family was offended that the school served jello (which aparently has a pork byproduct in it). I can understand them asking for a sign to be posted or something that says "jello contains a pork byproduct" but taking it off the menu entirely... seriously? I hated the white bread pb&j's they served in the lunch room when I was a kid but nobody was rallying against that despite white bread being devoid of any nutritional value and some people being alergic to nuts... don't like it don't eat it... or hey here's an idea- buy a superman lunch box and start making your kid's lunch at home... or better yet just tell your kid not to eat the damn jello. We've reached this level of PC because it's easier to back down from a confrontation than it is to try to get irrational people to see things rationally. I don't see why people should walk on egg shells just because someone has their panties in a twist about nothing.

Not all the time... I think without PC in our minds some people would go over the line without realizing it but when you get slapped with the "not PC" or "too PC" label in the middle of a cogent and reasoned argument, the person is usually just trying to marginalize your opinion and disregard what you're actually saying.

At many times, yes. Okay. So there was this story about a rabbi who was offended that there were no menorahs and Hannukah decorations in the local mall, while there was a plethora of Christmas trees and decorations. He complained. ...I'm sorry, Mr. Rabbi sir, but are you kidding me? I'm a Baha'i. I never once saw a 9-pointed star put up in celebration of Ayyam-i-ha and I do not complain to the local mall. Granted, there are twice as many Jews in the world as there are Baha'is, but the point is still there, if your religion meant anything to you on a spiritual level, you'd know decorations wouldn't make a difference. It's stuff like that, that irks me.
