Well for my relationship with my child, I'd say it's incredibly important. Most of my friends, I don't see but we still talk. We're all pretty liberal with the "mental hugs" and the I love you's, because we still want to be there for each other and it feels good to know that you are loved. With my sweetheart, yes, of course. That's an actions speak louder than words type of deal.

It affirms the words which we speak to our loved ones. An I love you is not an I love you without a kiss, et al. Imagine listening to your President give a speech as if his whole face and body were Botoxed? How convincing would that be to the president's citizens?

Highly. I cannot imagine being in a relationship without being physically connected. This goes outside sex per se. But the actual holding of hands, hugging, cuddling, kiss on the forehead. To me it is a love language that I highly use and am used to.

Like MLZellers described, I believe affection can be shown in many ways (physically, emotionally, verbally). Therefore, in my eyes, it seems very important in a relationship. What is love without knowledge of it's existence? And isn't that what affection is: showing how much you care; letting the person know what they mean to you. I have to admit, I have a little trouble showing affection. I almost feel embarassed, because it really exposes your emotions on such a delicate level. I always have to make a conscious effort to show affection with my boyfriend, and just tell him how I feel. I'm not extremely comfortable with talking about feelings, but I also realize that when you're in a relationship it's your responsibility to love and be loved. Even further, to support and accept support. I guess maybe all of these things, as well as others, are affection.

Obviously, there has to be some form of affection in every relationship, even for the people who don't easily show how they feel. Affection obviously lets us know that we are cared for, that we're not alone, that we can go to somebody.
