I think it depends, but since we know we only have this one lifetime, its best to live out each and every moment like it was your last.

All emotions have a purpose. As long as you realise your emotions come from *you* and no one else. No one can *make* you feel these things. It's you. It always comes back to you. As long as you're projecting/attributing your emotions onto others, they will continue to chain and oppress you, whatever they are. Creating a little detachment from your feelings is helpful in determining this distinction, imo.

I think the fear and anger we can do without -- so much so that it's a process I've dedicated my life to. The sadness? I don't think I would want to do away with that one. It's an indicator something is wrong either in me or in the world around me. The only way of eliminating sadness in this life's current structure that I can see, is to become so calloused as to deny there are important things that need attending to.

No. In fact fear, in small does is fun. That's why people ride roller coasters or watch scary movies. Fear was designed to protect us but of course you can have way too much of it. As for sadness and anger, I suppose in small doses I don't mind them either. They are reactions to a world that is not perfect. I wouldn't want to be happy all the time because I think there are times that call for those two emotions.

As Captain Kirk says, in what is arguable the corniest Star Trek movie of all time: "You know that pain and guilt can't be taken away with a wave of a magic wand. They're the things we carry with us, the things that make us who we are. If we lose them, we lose ourselves. I don't want my pain taken away. I need my pain." Growth and life come from pain; the same applies to fear, sadness, and anger. The thing that struck me about the situations in Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind is that by erasing their bad experiences these people opened themselves up to repeating the exact same mistakes over again.

When I first read the question it made me think of those movies/ tv shows were their is a non-human who can't show emotion and has trouble understand certain situations. I don't think I would want to get rid of these emotions (as much as I enjoy being happy). How would you show empathy...Imagine you were at a funeral. If you were all smiles the family may feel offended. How could you reach out and help other people you can't relate to them emotionally. You have to know when to be afraid, when to be sad, and sometimes be angry.

I wouldn't like to be so different from my fellows... But if I could learn from my sad or angry experiences help my fellows with them, then leave it behind together with ALL, that would be so GREAT! Let's go to there!
