I never go to sleep before 2 a.m. I've been a night owl since I was a baby. I think it's just the way some people are wired.

I firmly believe (barring a genuine medical condition and sometimes even then) anyone can train themselves to be a better sleeper. Extra energy at bedtime simply means you are not effectively burning off the energy you took in during the day. There's no better cure for insomnia than a good honest day's work. Whether that is accomplished in your job or in some leisure pursuit is up to you. Work on going to bed and getting up at the same time. Don't take in calories or stimulants 4-5 hours before your bedtime. Establish the routine, and you may be surprised to find your body adapting wonderfully to it. Just make it a reasonable routine! And listen to your body. As the routine develops it will tell you when to rise even without an alarm clock -- and also tell you when you're getting too much or not enough sleep. So long as you learn to listen.

lately i haven't been able to fall asleep until 3, 4, 5, or 6am. when i get to the point where i don't fall asleep until 6am or later, i will usually just stay awake, live out the whole day, and try to go to bed at 9pm or 10pm and wake up at a decent hour (8-9am) the next day... that plan hasn't worked out for me the past couple days! it's a little after 4am right now where i live. i've been falling asleep at 3 or 4am, and i'm so tired, i don't wake up until 12, 1, 2 or, like, today, 3pm! and then i just feel awful and groggy all day. it messes up everything. i'm screwed. :(
