Do Americans Have An Unhealthy Love/Hate Relationship With Their Own Government?
There seems to be a disconnect in between two man beliefs in American culture. The first is American Superiority: America is the best country in the world. Anyone who believes differently are unpatriotic and don't deserve the freedoms provided under the best country in the world. Combine this with the Protestant background of the City on the Hill, and you have an almost missionary zeal to spread our form of government throughout the world and propagate what we see as bringing personal liberties and freedoms to the world. Yet, the same people who believe in Superiority, also believe that any government 'intrusion' into their lives is a giant breach of conduct and should be stopped at all costs. Any government program doesn't work. Anything the government touches suddenly is evil in the face of free market corporatism. The government is evil, yet its the greatest in the world? Do these two ideas, both evident in the way America is presented in the media (the overarching distributor of culture), is a self-destructive clash of mentalities? Or does this make sense to keep the government in check? What do you think?
