Because people are often motivated by their feelings and if something makes you feel good, even temporarily, why stop? We don't stop to think about it all until we're alone and regretting something we did or until we are forced to come to terms with it. I guess also, it's hard to accept advice and criticism and such in a world full of people just trying not to care what others say.

I honestly think it is because most times when you are acting and heading on (as trite as it may be) that downward spiral you don't see outside of yourself long enough to see your own self-destruction
