as with everything , we can can look to shakespeare for understanding , " the world is but a stage , and we are actors .."..white lies are a social lubricant , but with friends , the masks come off ...and the mutual joy begins

I think it's part of our nature, a coping mechanism for helping smooth over social interactions -- at least in the moment! We're capable of it, but we don't have to give into it. I call the quest to fuse the many faces into one, integrity. What people see here should be what they see in person and what they see at a party should be what they see at church. It can seem harder in the short run, having to face up to things that could be easily glossed over with an act or a white lie. But time has shown me that it's a lot less work than trying to service all the different faces!

Oh hell yes. When you live in the world of 'mean' and 'nice.' Or 'happy'/'sad.' 'Me'/'You.' And not just two-faced. We're all multi-faced(faceted) b/c we play multiple roles and interact on a multitude of levels. When you just are, and stop needing to label whatever is in front of you, then it's all one-faced(faceted). So we are. And we're not.

Yes and no. As far as having differant aspect of ourselves that we let differant people see at differant times, I don't see that as a bad thing. You want to show your professional hard working side at work, your laid back casual side with friends, your loving caring passionate sexy side with your lover... if you mix all that around then life can get messy. As far as being a nice as*hole... guilty as charged. Instinct is to look out for our best interest, no matter how thoughtful or nice you are you can't change instinct.

i can only speak for myself: i am. calholli has a good point, but i think a little different. i think some of us are two faced, but both of these faces can change.

Lately I am trying to really show one face. But others are projecting on us, which complicates things quite a bit.
