I believe in one God who has given religion to the world to assist humanity in its evolution. This being said, I believe that if there were no religion, there would be no progress. In other words, we would be living as animals. Living as animals is not bad -- but it's not what we're here for. We are capable of rational thought, intellectual endeavor, scientific advancement. Religion is God's guidance to us so we may progress. He needs to re-state His wishes for us from age to age, because we muck up His religion with dogma and perversion of His guidance. If God's guidance were suddenly to be removed from the world today, we would quickly self-destruct. It is only our higher nature that keeps us from doing so right now.

Read Brave New World. :) Not really, but it is a good book. And there was no religion. The next to last chapter of that book is amazing.

If you want to look at mostly atheistic countries, you can look at Estonia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Japan and France. They all have less than 20% of their population that identify as religious.
