I have been thinking a LOT about this thread lately. I am struck by the words "Love the sinner hate the sin"...I guess I have to "Love the Bigot...Hate the Bigotry"...maybe that will help. I Just can't accept that a whole population is trying to be repressed and "changed" because others feel it is wrong according to their belief system. I struggle with this a lot. I get very angry..a lot. I cry about it because it just astonishes me I can marry and my brother can not. I understand the church position and that's fine. But in a civil issue? That's not fine. If your church teachings doesn't allow the marriage of same sex, then don't marry them but don't stop their happiness and wish to be united in a secular way.

This is why hermeneutics is very important. If you look at Jesus' purpose for coming to earth you'll see that it was to fulfill the law so that he would be a perfect sacrifice. So when he was speaking about the law it was borderline sarcasm. He was saying that if you were saved through the law than no one had hope of getting into heaven

wow, what a thread! from my perspective everyone here has come to the table with their points and will not have an open mind. nothing surprising there, i have met very few people who truly have open minds, and can't say that I have on either. we're all human. also though the way i see it christians get rather touchy and sometimes downright violent on these topics. I think these are some rather good points concerning contradiction in the bible. but of course, you can't expect someone who believes something with their "whole mind and soul" to actually step back and take an objective look at these things. because doing so would cause cracks in the walls of what they "know" as truth. i think the passages about slavery and the way women should act in church were rather clear, and i don't think that those passages were properly addressed. for me personally I don't take christianity as truth. I used to believe quite radically, but since then have thought differently. i won't waste your time and go into detail. but I think there is a god, more than likely not a god as any religions proclaim, but i do pray, and i ask for him to show me what is real, to lead me to believe what is true, not what men say is true. i think that is where i had my falling out with the church, because instead of telling me to seek and truly look for truth, it instead scolded me for being ignorant of the "truth" and dismissed my questions. i ask all of you to simply try and have an open mind and don't be afraid of what you may find. if god truly leads me christianity as truth, that's great, i just pray for the guidance to what is true.

Hi All - this is an interesting read. Very interesting question and lively feedback. I get the feeling that all those posting are friends, even as they tussle. I wish all of you every happiness. My own two cents on the issue on the table regarding the basic truth of the Bible as the Word of God, and the existence of apparently conflicting passages: Some passages are literal only, and some are metaphorical only, and some are both. It is only through the spirit of faith that which is which gets sorted out. The spirit of faith comes from prayer and reflection and is a gift of God to the willing heart. The sorting out of literal from metaphorical is not straightforward, thus there are many disagreements among sincere believers, and accusations of "picking and choosing" from others. If everyone approaches the Word of God in the spirit of love and humility, it will not matter if the understandings do not all match. We each just do our best, and believe we are individually accountable before God on the Day of Judgment. I am responsible for following His Word to the best of my ability and understanding, and you, dear, are responsible for yours.

yikes i read more of the discussion and i am terribly sorry partlycloudy! Pastor, how can you apologize because you are distracted writing a sermon then tell partlycloudy "you need to look up 'know' and 'wicked' in a Hebrew dictionary and then come back and talk to me." do you really believe Christ would ever say this to someone? it seems quite the opposite because he often rebuked the educated pharisee

hey partly cloudy. im sorry if any chrisitans have dismissed your questions as attacks. it's a terrible thing we christians often do. keep asking questions. i liked the one you asked. i'm going to have to think about it before i answer though right now i have no clue haha. the old testament confuses me because even though jesus is the fulfillment of it sometimes the old testament rules (like leviticus) seem so opposing to LOVE which jesus clearly came to preach :)

Well, you can't follow the OT word for word and be a Christian. Which is partly why I think many Jews didn't view Christ as the messiah. Personally, I think people take from the bible what they want to use against others or to make themselves feel better.

"Mat 5:18 "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. " Has the reason for the law -- to make us righteous in God's sight -- not been accomplished in Christ? What was it Christians believe was "finished" when Jesus cried out in John 19:30? And why was the veil in the temple separating the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies torn in two, coinciding with this event -- as if a way had been made for anyone to enter into the most holy place before God?

Could Jesus be suggesting that he is the fulfillment of the Law? Could he be saying that he wants to show us how to fulfill the Law through love/grace rather than through justice/intollerance? Through living the Law as opposed to living under it as he did? Maybe he got exasperated and says "Pig's will fly before you get that so I guess you win.The Law stays every jot and tittle" I don't know ,but there is a touch of that in his statement to me. I wish though that it was true that it would be unthinkable for a Christian to enslave Jesus.Look at what our Christian countries are doing all over the world and it applies equally that what we do to them we do to him too .Slavery would be a preffered option for great hordes of these the least of his bretheren I'm sure. We've a ways to go before we can say nice things like that about ourselves but I grant you it's a common virtue within the flock .Maybe just as well or his visit would have been pointless all together.

@partlycloudyholiday I'm a Christian and I have chosen not to bleieve in any of the hateful things you have said are "in the Bibel." My point stands. Everyone picks and choose. A great many people choose to be biased against an entire group of people without doing their homework--pocking out half-truths to back up their faulty supposlitions. .

People don't follow Christianity religiously. They just pick and choose which parts they like.
