Thats a tough question becasue both of them created a different style of guitar playing for the era. Van Halens (Eruption) is still a classic rip & All of Jimi's hits he did like voodoo child and purple haze are pure genuis. But Jimi did play a huge roll in getting rocknroll mainstream and for his era during the 60's with stuff going on in the world at that time events like woodstock and such have become iconic in their own way. So i would have to say Jimi was the better guitarist but they both brought unprecedented ingenuity to guitar playing.

ok here i'd like to point out the fundamental difference between music and organized sport. they have similarities and differences. they are similar in that they involve 1 or more participants who communicate to each other in various ways and compliment each others roles within a group in order to achieve a pleasurable pastime or entertainment. HERES THE BIG DIFFERENCE (i'm getting to the question at hand) in organized sports, there is a definitive winner. at the end of the day, one team wins and one team loses. factually, one team scored more points than the other and no one can argue who the best team is after the final championship matchup. there are no winners or losers in music. there are no points. there is no mathematically definitive "answer" to who the best band is or the best song. for instance, you could compare the 2007 red sox to the 1918 chicago cubs and deduce mathematically that one team from this century, is factually BETTER than the other team from a century ago. different time, different place, still a clear "best" there is no "better" or "worse" there is only "different." comparing any two musical entities is like apples and oranges. that being said, jimi is way better.

I guess I'm partial to Jimi, but he was the best from my generation. I used to wonder if he was an alien, but I don't think so, since I know his dad from my years in Seattle. I do think Eddie Van Halen is one of the best guitarists ever, and there are plenty of highly talented players worldwide.
