I haven't watched TV on a regular basis in over ten years. I haven't had a TV in my house in almost 2 years. My stress level has greatly decreased. I no longer get depressed about the state of things. My life has only improved without it. I am no longer being programmed.

I seldom watch TV. I never turn the thing on, and if somebody else has one on, I usually leave the room. I will occasionally watch a comedy, but that's it. I absolutely can't stand the news; it's completely negative. I call it the bad news. I understand that TV isn't even about the progamming; it's about selling ad space, and the big corporations buy that ad space. They dictate what you watch. I refuse to be held hostage during 17 or 18 minutes of commercials (at last count) to watch a "one hour" program, and be insulted by their subtle and blatant attempts at manipulation. I have a lot more time to do other things, (pretty much covered already below) and I'm a lot less stressed out. I choose not to give TV importance or priority in my life.

The implications of this question are massive. You might as well ask, what would life be like without language. While I hardly watch any TV (Lost, The Office and UFC stuff), I can say that I am a better person because I grew up watching Sesame Street. On the other hand, TV has definitely changed our culture for the worse, particularly when it comes to reality TV, Mtv and most news shows.

TV and the media has created fear in our societies. Everytime you switch on the news, there's a story of some young boy who has been stabbed, or tales of war...or sadistic documentaries. On the otherhand, there are some kick a*s comedies on there too...oh, and Stephen Fry. Legend. I always hear (from the folks) of tales before TV and they sound pretty sweet. Kids playing in the street for entertainment, stories being told, books being read, people using much more of their imaginations. I suppose it's just something we'll never know the answer to because there will always be TV, and if not TV then the internet, which is so much more accessible than TV! Mind scramble. :)

TV news turned the tide of public opinion on the Vietnam war. If TV reporters today were allowed to show the same kinds images, maybe we wouldn't still be at war in Iraq.

There would be more time spent communicating, enjoying nature and the outdoors, and using our time more efficiently in order to do work or to make our lives worthwhile. The TV should offer nothing but brief entertainment, but for some of us it has become a lifestyle that we're trapped in.

i lived without tv for almost 3 years (except for the last of those 3 years where i saw tv at the gym) and life wasnt all that different..i was out of the loop in many social conversations, i spent more time doing other things like reading and probably way too much time on the computer..but i guess 3 years isn't enough time to lose any of the programming 'damage' that tv had already done to me. haha. i now happily enjoy my digital hi def cable and an very happy to have it back. reality shows and news journalism shows are my biggest guilty pleasure, but i see it as a study in human behavior. ;)

We might also be listening to a lot more radio, and maybe, just maybe, actually reading.

If there was no TV, we would be watching shows on our computers and go to the movie theaters a little more often.

Not to worry, we'd find other means to disseminate pop culture, bad and good information, humor, pitching Oxyclean, Steve K & Rainn W, or commentary on day's events or selecting American Idols. We'd be about the same.

Although we'd probably all be a little less brain-dead, we'd probably also be less witty.
