I wonder if religions, generally speaking, are our process of trying to attain reconciliation with God by somehow "paying for it ourselves"? Rituals, beliefs, avoidances, adherences etc. It's like we struggle and strive to purchase a reconciliation that God has already made complete provision for, provided we meet the terms of His contract. Since He drafted the contract and it's one we have proven incapable of doing ourselves, He sets the terms. But we may not like that contract -- or perhaps just the notion that we of ourselves are unable to draft a contract of our own. How many years have we been striving to produce righteousness on the earth?? And I would disagree with @lindacapbelltr below that the originating purpose of organized religion was to control society. They have easily lapsed into this, but I will not vilify people who probably had intentions as good and noble as you or I when they began canonizing beliefs. They are not to be dissed for what our collective human nature does any time it perceives some sort of advantage to be wielded over our fellow human beings for our own benefit. I think it greatly disrespects those who came before us, and is a mega-cop-out for each of us to avoid owning the darker sides of the human nature that we all share. Own it, then make the conscious decision not to nurture it -- instead reaching for something greater.

Organized religion was created to control society. It usually has little/nothing to do with spirituality or enlightenment.

Organized religion is the antithesis to spiritual enlightenment. The churches have been pulling a massive con job on people for many centuries, promising them one thing and then doing everything possible to keep them from the knowledge that will help them. Trust repaid with treachery. Loyalty repaid with desertion.

"religion" comes from the roots "re" and "ligios", to connect or bring together again. this is the purpose of religion i believe. all the fluff and the struggle for power and the corruption, thats all part of it. the Baha`i faith offers answers to the integration of all religions, but only your heart knows the Truth...even when you feel confused.
