What is the role of a spiritual teacher?

Griz made a comparison in one of his posts between two spiritual models, New Age and Christian. I found it very interesting. New Age, in his view, is a two part model with Intelligence and Energy as absolutes. Christianity is a three part model with God (roughly like New Age Intelligence, I think), Holy Ghost (roughly like Energy, IMO) and Jesus as Coordinator between God and individual. I thought it was a great and valuable comparison! And, I wanted to add another element to the model, the living spiritual teacher... what is the role of the teacher?

I believe that the role of a spiritual teacher or spiritual parent is to help guide you to stay on a positive journey with God. They should be someone you can trust in and also someone that is true to their faith. Just because someone says they are christian or that they go to church doest mean they are right with God. So a spiritual teacher is there to help you get right and stay right with God...

@braxtonrob Thanks, but I am sure this is not an unique idea. Sometimes I start thinking something and read about it later....and/or wonder if I may have heard it before, but just did not understand it or did not buy into it at a particular time. I think it is very possible that life is just this....we do not really know that much about ourselves (humans). For example, scientists do not know what 75% of our DNA does and its function. I am sure it probably is the same for our brains. Maybe what we called our "soul" (the observer) is just part of our brain that is ego-free is able to remain in objective form. It is just a possible for this to be true as it is that we have a soul and are spiritual beings. Both are just belief systems. I like to remain open to both and just remain neutral to both ideas thinking we don't know for sure. ("don't know", BTY were my favorite words)

WOW beautiful thread! He is someone who is squeezing his potential to such hights and depths. Who has looked into and lived so many aspects and just overflowing that totality into your being. My definition of Ego is identification with form @Griz How can u miss Jesus when he is with u. U are not he is not. u r one. Maybe the missing sadness is just there in your heart. Give it space...

A spiritual teacher shows you what was in front of you all along, but you could never see for yourself. All teachers are a tremendous blessing! The best beings on the planet! Sit at the feet of a teacher (even if their foot could fit inside your hand) and live!

the spiritual teachers that i have come to love and am so grateful for all have this in common: ~they speak to my soul in a way that i get- ~they can translate older complex ideas into truth that i can easily understand ~they are spiritual "energetic transformers" in that they can buffer intense raw energy into more gentle energy that my system can handle

The role of the spiritual teacher is to guide you on your path to your truth. Once you meet your own self, listen to it, obey it and cherish it, you need no other guide.

To organize and control a group of followers.
