I have never really had religion in my life, nor did i have anything against it. I just never thought about it. This summer, a main goal I had was to explore life, including religion. The only religion I had an interest in was Christianity, so I took a weeklong church camp trip. During that time I decided once and for all, religion wasn't for me. The idea of people who weren't Christians needing to be "saved" was sad to me. I talked to a few different people there about my doubts and they said that they were coming from Satan. I think any religion that believes that people that think differently than themselves are unfortunate or influenced by evil is just strange. That's my opinion on Christianity, but I do believe in God. Just more of a spirit that animates, not a being that watches.

I find religion to be somewhat divisive. Based on knowledge I have so far, the basic doctrine among many religions is similar. The differences seem more superficial, such as how it is explained, holidays celebrated, style of worship, etc. My idea of God is evolving as I gain more life experience, learn more things, explore and develop my spirituality. Our relationship and conversations intimate, one-on-one and private. I don't pray or worship with others and I'm not religious.

In response to another poster in another collective who was discussing the practice of taking belief on faith alone: @par .....ay I've no idea at all why you would want to embrace such a religion young lady and if I were you I'd get with one that comes with some proof. Whatever It Is that brings everything into existence is probably at least talented enough to communicate with the part of creation that It specifically designed to think in the abstract and comprehend the intangible. All that remains is for you to use that magnificent gift to find the Message from the Creator, investigate the evidence that comes with it and then embrace the Message. Simple as that. No mystery. No excuses. I believe her actual religion was the extreme dislike of religion. Just because one hates something doesn't mean one is right in that perspective. Most believe that if they hate or are angry about something that they are right to be so. That can and usually does fall under the dark flag of prejudice. One who knows would not fall in behind that banner.

I can't even begin to answer this, or even understand the answers below, until we have a definition of "religion." Are we talking about "organized religion" implying a hierarchy of religious leaders and a set of "rules?" Or are we talking about religion as some set of beliefs/doctrines about spiritual things? Or are we talking about theism in general?

Truth be told? Religion is the cause of every good thing that has happened here on earth. What is it? It is that which binds people together in justice and harmony, love and peace, order and equality before the law. Anything that calls itself religion but doesn't do that is no religion. If religion is not a cause of unity of human kind then it is no religion. Great exploratory conversation. How about this: as it stands you can't imagine God. In the first place you nor I nor anyone can begin to fathom even one thought of the Whatever It Is that dreams or thinks or brings whatever this universe is into existence all the time. Can't be done. You can't do it. I can't do it. Nobody can do it. So its a moot point what the Christians or anyone else thinks of God or the nature of God or what God thinks or does. Anything that we know of God is most likely served up to us with our capacity in mind. In other words we get the pablum fit for the babes that we are. The reality is way beyond our ken. Barkers silly argument is an evidence of that and what Christians GENERALLY think of God has got to be hanging right there in the same neighborhood as Barkers argument. See Barkers argument here: http://www.soulpancake.com/view_image/1000/3/photo-4452113.html" target="_blank">http://www.soulpancake.com/view_image/1000/3/photo-4452113.html

I'll just copy and paste something I wrote in another thread, because it is applicable here: I think once you've made up your mind about something that no one can no for sure, you've essentially cut off the blood supply to the really interesting bits of your brain. In some respects, you go on auto pilot. This is true of religious people as well as atheists. While you may enjoy the placebo effect of feeling immunized from reality, you are in some regard not truly living. Never stop questioning. Intellectual curiosity is neither a sin nor an admission of weakness. To proclaim certainty in an instance where there is no proof is to admit that truth is less important to you than the comfort you get from your drug of choice, whether it be religion or atheism.

I think religion is good. Even though many people may say it has caused war and destruction, religion is usually family oriented. It teaches people good morals, for the most part, and pushes people to live pure, healthy lives. And there ARE many historical events that are linked to religion so it's not all bullsh*t. It's just that there are many different interpretations and misinterpretations of the god, jesus, the bible, etc.

Science holds my idea of God. I feel that particle physics has proven that we are everywhwere and nowhere at the same time and in this paradox lies the Source man calls God.

I believe God is not a man or some being He is everything. Every thing is contingent upon His arrival, nothing becomes without His request, nothing transpires without His Might. He is the Unknowable Phenomenon. He is too much for some minds or many refusing to seek truth in creation. If there werent people that were completely depending on themselves for all the answers we wouldnt have discovered many things in tihs world. I am also a discoverer, but I am also a believer. Partlycloudyday: Can science explain why snakes have no legs, and elephants have long noses? It can learn everything there is to know about those animals but they never will know who designed them unless they seek inside themselves. Look at themselves and how totally excellent your visuals, thoughts, connections, smiles, are and see religion and belief isnt something you "fall back on" when you "need a crutch." And if so that is not a bad religion it's a religion that holds people with lack of integrity. If you love God you don't blame Him because you realize these are things you must go through and be expecting it. Me and you arent even much different you go through alot of hard times and alot of good times just like I. And just like the next guy. Some just have faith and some don't. Just a question, why wouldn't you want to get an explanation for things, beyond what millions of men have discovered and made over time. Especially when certain Men have made movements all over the world for years. Men endowed with the true Knowledge of God. What many can't phathom. But why wouldn't people want explanation are we just going to sit here and loaf. Instead of speaking of God people speak of triviality- this world. God makes so much sense to many many many a folk. :)
