I think you can have a spiritual union with our without "marriage", all you need is Love. I Love my wifey...but didn't need the weddin'..as far as I'm concerned we were a "unit" long before we got married =)

I would hope it's more spiritual than anything. I mean, it's the union of two souls to be bonded together for what we can only hope for is eternity. It's a beautiful thing to think about and shouldn't be ruined by having to think of it as this religious thing you are obligated to do just because your religion says so.

One of the reasons for which i asked the question, is that there are more and more couples that have great spiritual love relationships and choose consciously not to get married, which doesn't prevent them from enjoying the commitment, love and joy in their relationship. I have fsome friends that had kids and still chose not to get married, and they have a relationship that to me seems stronger than quite a few marriages i know. So i'm wondering why do we choose to get married and we don't just commit to a life-long partnership?

Spiritual...It is between you and your partner and has nothing to do with/no part in religion.

The best marriages (ie, the ones that actually LAST and in which both partners are happy and content and satified) are spiritual unions based on love, commitment, honor, flexibility, devotion, respect, attraction, joy, etc. Giving to the other person of yourself, instead of merely believing that person must be what you want them to be, is VERY important. Been at it for 22 years...

The tax break thing is relatively new, as are the IRS, Social Security numbers and the Fed.

In our society it is a social/economic conveinience that may or may not have a spiritual component. It is pretty silly when you think about it. To expect another to "make you happy and meet all of your needs" for the rest of your life. Why else do we find so many marriages ending after only 5 to 10 years? We all have so many unrealistic expectations. The majority of marriges are not conscious at all, just as the majority of people are not spiritually conscious.

I think it's a choice to promise to be faithful to one person. Also, handy doing taxes. :)
