Never ever ever give money to gypsies. The entire clan will follow you all around Paris the entire day.

From the last time I travelled, I learned that going it alone is just as good as having a companion. I can stop to look at whatever catches my eye. I can linger or hasten according to my own whims. I can eat what-, where-, whenever I want. I can talk to strangers and make connections or choose to maintain my solitude. I can take a ton pictures of the exact same thing until I get it the perfect shot. And I can I can sleep in the middle of the king-sized bed and use all the pillows.

Last time I travelled was to Vegas. I learned that you can have people living in poverty in the same town where so many of the ultra-rich high rollers spend their money. I also learned that everybody, and I mean everybody has got their hand in your back pocket in Vegas. They should just develop a vacuum device that sucks your money out of your wallet and be done with it.

I learned a different perspective on my own country. I saw how Americans are viewed by people in other countries, and hopefully managed to change a few minds. I learned how it felt to be a stranger, to be stared at because I was different. I learned that a smile, laughter, and compassion are universal. I learned that there is kindness in every country. I learned that its a bad idea to use beer to brush your teeth (because the water isn't safe) .

I learn something new every time. I'm leaving for London and Warsaw today. I'll spend the next fortnight finding something new to think about.

I learned about people; others; myself; the human condition. What is exotic and fascinating to me, is commonplace and everyday for someone else. So then my blah everyday is exotic and fascinating with just a simple "walk a mile in their shoes". When I travel I find everywhere I go people are existing in different realities -- cultures, climates, political systems, definitions of "acceptable" and "taboo" -- yet we are all the same. Looking for love, joy, peace and a purpose greater than self. Looking to find meaning, to make connections, to see the abundant positive sides to the human condition in the eyes of total strangers even while acknowledging that the negative sides are there too weighing us all collectively down. And perhaps that which we see, we can collectively work to do something about? Too often we collectively seem to settle for mere existence, rather than seize the joy of life in each moment. If I come back from a trip and cannot see a bit more of the "fascinating and exotic" in my "everyday" , then it was a failed trip in my book.

I suppose it would be how BIG the world is and how insignificant I feel in the midst of it all.
